*-Albertane, Capital Of MaRs-*
Albertane, the capital city of Mars, is located on the South West side of the planet. Since the Martian days are very hot and the nights extremely cold, Albertane is contained within a bio-dome. The climate mimics the sub-tropical zones of Earth, and allows lush vegetation to grow, except in the district of Middle of Nowhere, where the climate is regulated to constant Winter as the residents like to be snowed in. Albertane's centrepiece is Lake Hanson, which was created by the first wave of settlers from Earth. The lake, with its stunning pink water, is fringed with red sand, and the North side of the lake is a surfers' paradise thanks to artificial wave technology.
Other tourist attractions in Albertane include the Crystal Falls, again artificially created but spectacular nonetheless, the Tulsa Tower on Oklahoma Boulevard, the city's main thoroughfare, and the quirky architecture of the Astrodome Stadium is well worth a look. Albertane is, of course, home to the Hanson brothers, direct descendants of the first settlers on Mars. The city's current mayor, Isaac Hanson, owns a fabulous home in the city's fashionable Middle of Nowhere district, and again, the house is well worth a visit if you appreciate Martian architecture. As founders of Albertane, the Hanson ancestors' presence is very much felt within the city, as indeed is that of the band, who were forced to leave Earth in 1998 because their sound systems violated local Strategic Arms Limitation Treaties. The Martians adore Hanson, however, and have taken them very much to their hearts since the first time Zak met the strange man at the bus stop.
The city offers many forms of entertainment. The Astrodome is home to Albertane Albion, the soccer team currently at the top of the Western Galactic Premier Division, the Mars Attack All Stars, Mars's national ice hockey team, and Zakattack, the current undisputed Universal champion zero - G football team. The team was founded by Zak Hanson in 1999. Zak, still only 18 but undoubtedly the best roof attack player of all time, is currently the youngest player/manager of the team which has recently signed Jim Bexley Speed from the London Jets. The stadium also hosts many exhibitions and concerts. Hanson, The Wild Stallions, Dogstar and Marilyn Manson recently played there, and last year Taylor Hanson chose the Astrodome as the venue for his wedding, an event that was broadcast live throughout the Galaxy.
There are many fine shops in Albertane, mainly centered around Oklahoma Boulevard, and many theatres, nightclubs, caf-bars, etc, and all cultures and tastes are catered for. There are restaurants covering a wide variety of cuisines, but the best - and trendiest - place to be seen is the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, situated on Weird Street. It does tend to be a little expensive, but you simply can't come to Albertane without sampling the local dish of choc chip cookies, jelly beans and diet Dr Pepper. It is a taste sensation not easily forgotten.
Aside from the hustle and bustle of the shops, wild nightlife, etc, Albertane also has a lot to offer for the more spiritually minded. There is no main religion - the Martians are very tolerant and all faiths peacefully live side-by-side. It is possible to stay at a retreat in New Milwaukee, about 15km from Albertane, where native Martian monks live. Their having no hair identifies them, and they wear only their underwear, but they are a peace loving people and will make you feel very welcome. As all religions are catered for in Albertane, there is a holiday nearly every day, but there are three major festival days - March 14, October 22 and November 17. The National Anthem (MmmBop) is played constantly on these days, and the people celebrate with huge firework parties. Martian President Will Smith's birthday is also celebrated, as is Independence Day, and it is constantly Christmas in the Middle of Nowhere district.
It is easy to get around in Albertane. Roller blades are the preferred means of transport, but there is also a good public transport system. The Martians are very friendly, and will gladly strike up a conversation with you at the bus stop. Long-distance communication is very easy, although mobile phones are banned. The usual method of communication is by yellow walkie-talkie. There are no laws in Albertane except for 'be excellent to each other', 'love, peace and bullet-proof marshmallows', and unless you are a native Martian monk it is illegal to have short hair.
Getting to Albertane couldnt be easier. The Space Shuttle leaves daily from Florida, and flights can be booked through your local NASA travel agent. The USS Voyager, back from her mission in the Delta quadrant, has now been refitted and offers luxury cruises to Mars several times a year. For those with less time to travel the TARDIS runs a daily service, as does Bill & Ted's phone booth.
